What to do right now

  1. 1

Shut off the water. Close the main water valve if it is safe to reach.

  2. 2

Stay clear of electricity. Keep away from outlets and appliances in wet areas.

  3. 3

Stop using drains. If sewage is coming up, don't flush or run water.

  4. 4

Smell gas? Leave first. Call the gas utility or 911 from outside the house.

Gas smell: do not use switches, phones or anything that sparks inside. Leave the house, then call the gas utility or 911. A plumber repairs the gas line only after the utility has made it safe.

Emergency plumbing questions

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Water or sewage entering the house that you can't stop, a burst pipe, no water at all, or a water heater leaking heavily. A gas smell is an emergency too, but the first call goes to the gas utility or 911, from outside the house.

What should I do before the plumber arrives?

Close the main shutoff valve, open the lowest faucet to drain the lines, switch off power to wet areas only if the panel is dry and safe to reach, and stop using drains if sewage is backing up.

Do emergency plumbers cost more?

Many plumbing companies charge a higher rate or a trip fee outside business hours. Ask for the after-hours charges and the price of the repair before work begins.

Should I call a plumber or the water utility?

Call the utility if the leak is in the street or at the meter, or if you can't shut off water at the house. Call a plumber for anything on your side of the meter.

Water still running?

Close the main valve and call. Calling is free.
