Emergency plumbing
Burst pipe repair
A burst pipe needs two things right away: the main water valve closed, and a plumber to cut out the split section and replace it. Shut the water off first, then call. The repair itself is usually a few feet of new pipe; most of the cost and mess comes from how long the water ran.

Pipes burst when pressure inside them rises past what the pipe wall can hold. Freezing is the usual cause: ice forms a plug, and the water trapped between the plug and a closed faucet has nowhere to go. Corrosion, a failed fitting or very high supply pressure can split a pipe too.
The plumber finds the break, isolates it, and replaces the damaged section with copper, PEX or CPVC to match local code. If the split came from freezing, they check the rest of that run, because a pipe that froze in one spot often cracked in another.

Updated · How we write our pages
What are the signs you need a plumber?
- Water spraying or pouring from a wall, ceiling or under a sink
- A sudden drop in water pressure through the whole house
- The water meter spinning with every fixture turned off
- A new stain or bulge spreading on a ceiling or wall
- The sound of running water inside a wall
What does the plumber do?
- 1
Stop the water
The main shutoff is closed and the lines are drained through the lowest faucet.
- 2
Find the break
The plumber opens the wall or ceiling at the wet area and checks the full run for more splits.
- 3
Replace the section
Damaged pipe is cut out and new pipe is joined with fittings approved by local code.
- 4
Pressure test
Water is turned back on slowly and every new joint is checked before the wall is closed.
What affects the cost of burst pipe repair?
It depends on the job, and a plumbing company can only give a firm price after seeing it. Prices also vary by region and by time of day. These are the factors that move a quote up or down. Ask for the price in writing before work begins.
- Where the pipe is: an open basement is quicker than a finished wall or a slab
- Pipe material and how much of the run needs replacing
- Whether the call is after hours
- How many separate breaks there are after a freeze
- Water damage cleanup, which is usually a separate trade
What can you do yourself, and when should you call a plumber?
Safe to try
- Close the main shutoff valve
- Open the lowest faucet to drain the lines
- Switch off the breaker for any wet outlet or appliance, if the panel is dry and safe to reach
- Move belongings and start mopping up
Call a plumber when
- Don't use a torch or heat gun on a frozen or split pipe
- Don't turn the water back on to test a tape or clamp patch
- Don't stand in water near outlets or a live appliance
Burst Pipe Repair questions
What should I do first when a pipe bursts?
Close the main water shutoff valve. It is usually where the water line enters the house, near the meter or the water heater. Then open a faucet at the lowest level to drain what is left in the pipes.
Does homeowners insurance cover a burst pipe?
Sudden, accidental water damage is commonly covered, while damage from long-term leaks or lack of heat often is not. Coverage depends on your policy, so call your insurer and take photos before cleanup.
Can a burst pipe be repaired without replacing all the plumbing?
Yes, in most cases. The plumber replaces the split section. A full repipe only comes up when the pipe is corroded along its length or has burst in several places.
How long does burst pipe repair take?
An exposed pipe is usually repaired in one to two hours. A pipe inside a wall, ceiling or slab takes longer, because the plumber has to open the surface, and drying the wet materials afterward can take several days.
Can I turn the water back on after a pipe bursts?
Not until the split section has been replaced. If the burst is on one branch that has its own shutoff valve, a plumber can isolate that branch so the rest of the house has water while the repair is arranged.
Is a pipe clamp or repair tape a permanent fix?
No. Clamps and tape are temporary holds that can slow a small leak for hours or days. A burst pipe needs the damaged section cut out and replaced with new pipe and proper fittings.
Why do pipes burst in warm states?
Homes in warm climates are built with pipes in attics, exterior walls and open crawl spaces, because hard freezes are rare. When a freeze does arrive, those unprotected pipes fail in large numbers, as happened in Texas in February 2021.
