Sewer line repair vs. replacement: how to decide

Published by Prime Plumbing · Updated · How we write our guides

Short answer

Repair the sewer line when a camera inspection shows one or two isolated defects in pipe that is otherwise in good shape. Replace or line it when defects repeat along the length, the pipe material is at the end of its life, or the pipe has sagged or collapsed. The footage, not the symptoms, should decide.

Why start with a camera inspection?

A sewer camera shows what the pipe is made of, where each defect is and how far it is from the house. Ask for the recording. With it, you can get comparable quotes and check that the proposed work matches what the pipe actually needs.

When is a spot repair enough?

  • A single cracked or offset joint
  • One root entry point in otherwise clean pipe
  • Damage from a specific event, such as nearby excavation
  • Newer PVC with one bad connection

When is replacement or lining the better choice?

  • Root intrusion at many joints
  • Cast iron with the bottom rusted out
  • Fiber conduit (Orangeburg) pipe that has gone oval or blistered
  • A belly that holds water and waste
  • Repeated backups after repeated cleaning

What are the trenchless options?

Cured-in-place lining creates a new pipe inside the old one, and pipe bursting pulls in a new pipe while breaking the old one apart. Both need only small access pits. Neither corrects a sag, and lining needs a host pipe that still holds its shape.

When should I call a plumber?

Call after a second main-line backup or as soon as sewage appears at a floor drain. The plumber clears the line, inspects it and explains the options. Permits, utility marking and the city inspection are handled as part of the job.

Common questions

How long does a sewer line last?

Clay pipe lasts 50 to 60 years or more, cast iron 50 to 75, and PVC is expected to last 100. Roots and soil movement often end a line's life earlier than the material would.

Is pipe lining as good as replacement?

A properly installed liner is rated for about 50 years and seals out roots. It slightly reduces the pipe's diameter and cannot fix a sag, so it suits pipes that are cracked but still aligned.
