Plumbers in San Antonio, TX

San Antonio's water comes mainly from the Edwards Aquifer, a limestone formation that makes it some of the hardest city water in Texas. Scale is the background condition for every water heater, faucet and appliance in town.

Homes and plumbing in San Antonio

Most homes are on slabs. On the north side they sit on shallow limestone, where trenching for a sewer or water line can mean cutting rock. South and east of downtown the soil turns to clay, which moves with moisture. Older neighborhoods near the center have pier-and-beam houses with galvanized pipe.

Hard water scale

Scale fills the bottom of tank water heaters, causing popping noises and early failure, and blocks tankless units that are not descaled. Softeners are common for this reason.

Slab leaks

Copper lines under slabs fail from soil movement and abrasion. Rerouting overhead is usually less disruptive than opening the floor.

Rock and repairs

Where limestone sits just below the surface, sewer line replacement takes longer and costs more, which makes trenchless lining worth asking about.

San Antonio plumbing questions

How often should I flush my water heater in San Antonio?

Once a year at minimum. With water this hard, sediment builds up fast, and a tank that has never been flushed may be best left alone and replaced when it fails, since stirring up heavy scale can clog the drain valve.

Does San Antonio restrict water softeners?

Softeners are allowed. Choose a demand-regenerating model, which uses less water and salt than older timer-based units, and have it plumbed so outdoor faucets stay on unsoftened water.
