How to prevent drain clogs

Published by Prime Plumbing · Updated · How we write our guides

Short answer

Keep the four main culprits out of the pipes: grease, hair, wipes and food scraps. Wipe grease into the trash, put a strainer in every sink and shower, flush only toilet paper and run plenty of cold water with the garbage disposal. These habits prevent most household clogs.

How do I prevent kitchen sink clogs?

  • Pour cooled grease into a container and put it in the trash
  • Scrape plates into the trash or compost before rinsing
  • Keep coffee grounds, rice, pasta and fibrous peels out of the disposal
  • Run cold water before, during and for a few seconds after using the disposal

How do I prevent bathroom drain clogs?

  • Fit a hair catcher over shower and tub drains and empty it weekly
  • Lift out and clean the sink stopper once a month
  • Brush hair before showering rather than in it

What should never be flushed?

  • Wipes, including those labeled flushable
  • Paper towels and tissues
  • Cotton swabs, dental floss and feminine products
  • Cat litter

Do drain cleaners and home remedies help?

When should I call a plumber?

Call when a drain clogs again within weeks, when more than one fixture is slow or when plunging does nothing. Those point to buildup deep in the line or a pipe problem that habits alone will not fix.

Common questions

Is it bad to pour boiling water down the drain?

Hot tap water is fine. Boiling water can soften PVC pipe joints and crack a porcelain sink or toilet, so avoid pouring it straight from the kettle.

How often should drains be professionally cleaned?

Most homes never need routine cleaning. Houses with large trees over the sewer line or a history of backups benefit from a cleaning every year or two.
